Link's Crossbow Training is Great; Zapper Ergonomics are OK!

Review Date: November 20, 2007
Reviewer: IMO666, Arlington, VA USA
The combination of the Zapper and Link's Crossbow Training is well worth the $20 I paid. The Zapper (which is only a plastic shell for the Wiimote and the Nunchuck) is very sturdy and amazingly well-conceived. The instructions are quite clear on how to insert the Wiimote and the Nunchuck into the Zapper.

Of course the ergonomics of the Zapper are odd, with the trigger (the Wiimote B button) being forward vs to the rear like a rifle or shotgun trigger. However, it's a compromise that Nintendo decided it had to make based on its tests on prototypes. That, and the fact that the infrared component of the Wiimote must be to the front.

The bundled game, "Link's Crossbow Training" is multifaceted and exactly what's needed to give the player practice using the Zapper. AND, the game is a lot of fun all by itself.

The bottom line on this is that the combo of the Zapper plus the game Link's Crossbow Training is a must-have (at least for me) and worth the price. Highly recommended.

I was skeptical when i saw the box. "We don't need to turn the wii-motes into a gun. How good can the pack-in be?" But then I had second thoughts and bought it. We've been playing it all night. I was a Duck Hunt fan and the rail shooting levels are fantastic - like the first time you played Mrs. PacMan after being a PacMan fan but so much better. There's a mix of scrolling, rail and 1st person shooting levels set in the Twilight Princess world that can be played in order or on their own. If you get a Wii for the holidays, pick this up as well. I can tell there's no point in even taking the wii-mote out of the zapper. The family will be playing this just about everyday, despite our having about a dozen other Wii titles. My 3 year old was delighted when she beat my high score. In my defense it would have been higher but I hit a live chicken. My 8 year old informed me "Mom! You can't shoot LIVE things!!!" Who knew? It was so much fun blasting the fruit balloons.... and the skeletons.... I'd defend my record, but my husband and brother have been playing for the last four hours and I can't get near it. Well worth the $20 - if they'd sold the game alone I would have paid more.
Worth the price!!

I got this for $19.99 during the amazon pre-order time period. It is now $24.99 and not even in stock, I'm guessing because EVERYONE and their mothers have been ordering it for themselves and for X-mas gifts. This would be a perfect gift for someone with a Wii....or for yourself!

Anyways, the Wii Zapper is easy to set up with the nunchuck and remote. It goes well with the game, Link's Crossbow Training, and is neither too difficult nor too easy, so that people of all ages can play. I like how there are additional levels to "unlock" so you know there will be more stages, environments, and enemies to destroy.

For the price plus free shipping it beats getting this at the store for more $$ and the game itself is worth the price. The Zapper is plastic and probably really cheap to produce, so I consider the game a great buy at $19.99. I wish it came in the plastic media case like the other games because the paper envelope will probably be messed up in no time.

**UPDATE**
I have found a Con. I have the Nyko battery charger to charge the remotes and realized that with the rubber battery backing, the Wii remote becomes too thick to slide and lock into the zapper apparatus!! Thus, I have to dig out my AA batteries to use with the zapper while my remaining remotes have the Nyko rechargeable battery with the rubber backing.

My Wii games (in order from my most favorite to my least favorite):
Wii Sports
Wii Carnival and Link's CrossBow Training (tied)
Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
Wii Play
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
Cooking Mama
Brunswick Bowling
For the price how can you go wrong?

The bottom line is fun. The Wiizapper delivers on this and then some. Boxed with Link's Cross Bow there is no doubt you will get hours of entertainment out of the Zapper and the game it comes with. Even if you never buy another game for it Link's Crossbow is extremely entertaining and has a lot of replay value considering you are going to pay no more then $25.00 for it. If you were lucky enough to pick this up for $19.99 then even better.

The game play is simple enough. Point and shoot. The controls and aim work flawless as one might expect using the Zapper with the Wiimote firmly in place. If you enjoy rail shooters or were a fan of the game duck hunt from the golden age you will feel right home with both the Zapper and Link's Crossbow.

A very nice addition to the Wii library. Worth the purchase.
Worth the money for Link's crossbow training

I purchased and this yesteray, and played it for a couple of hours last night. The bundled game (Link's Crossbow Training) is definitely worth the purchase cost.

I'm not convinced that using the zapper enclosure is any better than just using the remote and nunchuck freehand, but it does make the "shooting" experience feel more authentic.

Purchase it for the game, and consider the zapper peripheral a bonus, and you'll be a happy Wii gamer....

Gameplay
Set in the diverse environments of 'Baseball Kingdom,' this is a game that is easy to learn and compulsively addictive, but that also can be made to be as challenging as you want it to be. When you are a rookie go on the offensive by swinging the Wii Remote to smack singles, doubles, triples or even home runs; while when playing defense simulating a pitching motion to toss the ball over the plate. As you grow more confident in your skills, you can choose to attach a nunchuck controller while playing defense to control outfielders for an extra challenge. And regardless at what level you play at always remember that Mario Super Sluggers' nine mini-games are always an option. So, when you need a break from organized play, just grab a few friends and take the mound in a pitching challenge or swing for the fences in the home run derby.

In addition, since Mario Super Sluggers supports up to four players, with enough controllers, you can go two on two in epic battles. As you traverse the Baseball Kingdom, put together your "all star" team made up of your favorite Nintendo characters including the games five captains. Each of these has different abilities and temperament making them as valuable as they are difficult in the right or wrong situation. The result is a take on the American Pastime that you and your family will have a hard time putting down.

Multiple Game Modes
Baseball should be a social game, so whether you are by yourself or surrounded by friends, there's a Mario Super Sluggers game for every occasion.

  • Challenge: Trek across Baseball Kingdom in this singleplayer. mode. Defeat characters in a variety of baseball-related challenges to persuade them to join your team. Once you've assembled an all-star team for the ages, throw down with the baddest baseballer in town: Bowser! The singleplayer. Challenge Mode is a sports fan's dream.
    • Explore the rich and varied landscape of Baseball Kingdom as you gather teammates for your fight against Bowser. From lush tropical jungles to modern urban landscapes, each area of the kingdom is a new experience.
    • Like high-powered free agents, the characters in Mario Super Sluggers won't join just any old team-they want to play for a winner. When you find a new character, he or she will test your skills on the field. Only by besting them in hitting, pitching and fielding contests can you get them to join your side.
    • In Challenge Mode, you can control one of five captains, each with personal special powers. Yoshi can jump through manholes, Wario has the power of magnetism and Donkey Kong can climb vines and shatter barrels.
  • Exhibition: Hit the field and try your luck with a team of your choice. You can play against either the computer or up to three other players.
  • Mini-game: Challenge yourself or take on up to three other players in nine mini-games. From home run contests to pitching duels, you'll have more fun than a rookie at his first spring training.
  • Toy Field: Battle against three other players in a hitting and fielding extravaganza. You can set your turn limit and the skill level of your computer opponents, or just play against friends.
  • Training: Learn the ropes in an extensive tutorial mode.
Special Powers, Weapons, Moves & Features
Mario Super Sluggers isn't your typical baseball game. From special moves to obstacle-filled stadiums, there's always something new around the corner for players on the field to deal with. Just a few of the goodies you'll find out on it's fields of play are:
  • Special Moves: All of the captains have unique Star Skills that allow them to perform special moves while pitching or batting. Mario can turn his fastball into a fireball, Daisy can create a flower garden in the outfield and Luigi can turn infield hits into a raging tornado. Non-captains can also use Star Skills to put a little extra mustard on hits or pitches.
  • Chemistry: Just as in real sports, certain characters in Mario Super Sluggers have a special connection on the field. Known as chemistry, this connection allows players to make spectacular leaping catches, gun down speedy base runners and use items to interfere with fielders.
  • Stadiums: There are nine unique stadiums in the game, everything from an ice-filled castle to an urban cityscape. Many stadiums can be accessed at both day and night, allowing you to play a doubleheader under the lights.
  • Wii Nunchuk: Experienced gamers can also attach the Nunchuk controller for a more advanced gaming experience.

Product Details

  • Swing the Wii Remote to bat and pitch and use the Nunchuk to control outfielders
  • Build an “all star” roster of your favorite Mario characters, each with unique personalities and abilities

The game features a slick redesigned guitar as well as a Music Studio music creator that lets players compose, record, edit and share their own rock ‘n’ roll anthems.

Wireless Instruments

New to GHWT is a redesigned, more responsive guitar controller, which features a touch-sensitive slide bar on the neck that allows the player to play through certain song passages without needing to strum.

Be the Next Great Songwriter

Music Studio lets players express their musical creativity by giving them access to a full complement of tools to create digital music from scratch utilizing the guitar controller and drum kit. Players can create their tracks and then play them in-game or share the recordings with the entire Guitar Hero community through GHTunes. GHTunes allows other gamers from around the world to download and play the community's original tracks.

Create the Band

Budding rock stars can live out their rock ‘n’ roll fantasies by playing either a single instrument or any combination of instruments, in addition to the full band experience. When rocking as part of a band, up to four players can jam together in quickplay or as they progress through a career. Both band and single-player careers feature non-linear progression giving artists the option to change difficulty and instruments with a variety of different gigs available at any time.

Never Jam Solo Again

Virtual musicians in need of band mates can take their careers online forming worldwide ensembles so no rock star ever has to play a gig solo. Plus, GHWT adds a "Battle of the Bands" modes, which allows eight players to join online and challenge each other band-to-band to establish global supremacy.

A Game Play Mode Just for the Wii

Jump into the "Mii Freestyle" game play mode that is unique to the Wii. Create Blues, Rock or Metal masterpieces by yourself, or join with friends to jam freely together on guitar controllers and the drum kit controller.

Customize Everything

The character creator allows gamers to create a rock star with style as unique as their own. Absolute customization from the clothes, to the facial and body structure, to the tattoos and accessories, players are encouraged to unleash their inner rock legend. The Rock Star Creator doesn't just allow players to build the ultimate rock god; the in-depth creators include the ability to customize guitars, drums and microphones. Adding yet another layer of personalization, gamers can create custom logos for their instruments, band, or album covers.

A Set List for the Ages

The Guitar Hero World Tour set list is comprised entirely of master recordings from some of the greatest artists of all-time including Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles, and Sublime.
